Hill The church also called the Castle is a hill situated in the forks of the Tanwia and Jelenia valleys. It is overgrown with a mixed forest and surrounded by a rampart of a stronghold, which dates from the 12th - 13th centuries. Probably this place was not permanently inhabited, but served only as a shelter during the invasions of enemies. Traces of settlement date back to the 8th - 9th century. According to legend, there was a huge castle built by a knight named Gołdap, who had a very pretty daughter - Tanewę. During Gołdap's absence, the castle was tricked by the Tatars (the legend below tells this). At the beginning of the 17th century, a Uniate church with a Basilian monastery was built on the hill. founded by Tomasz Zamojski. In 1748 it was converted into the church of St. John of Nepomuk, but because of a distant place, he did not enjoy a large turnout and in 1796. was pulled down. During the January Uprising and the last war, insurgents and partisans were hiding on the hill. These events are commemorated by a cross and a monument on the top of the Church. We reach the Church Hill along the blue Szumów trail. Walking along the banks of the Jeleń River, we reach a large waterfall (time about 0.5 hours). Going further along the blue trail (after 45 minutes) we go through a steep gorge on the river. We leave the river and we come across a black trail, which together with the blue trail lead to Church.
